A Day I Will Never Forget
Out of all the photography trips I have taken over the years, one day stands out above many others. September 22, 2018, was one of those rare days where everything came together perfectly. The weather, the lighting, the colors, and the timing all aligned to create one of the most beautiful autumn experiences I have ever witnessed.
That morning I found myself driving up Cedar Canyon near Cedar City, Utah. Like many photographers, I was chasing fall colors, hoping to find some beautiful aspens that were nearing their peak. What I discovered that day exceeded every expectation I had.
Discovering Webster Flat Road
As I made my way up Highway 14, I turned onto a small road called Webster Flat Road. It is one of those places that many people drive past without realizing the beauty hidden just beyond the turnoff. Almost immediately, I knew I had stumbled upon something special.
The aspens were absolutely glowing.
The timing could not have been better. The sun was positioned at just the right angle, illuminating the leaves and causing them to radiate shades of gold, orange, yellow, and red. Every direction I looked seemed to reveal another incredible scene. The colors were so vibrant that they almost appeared unreal.
I remember stopping repeatedly to photograph the trees because every few hundred feet revealed another composition worth capturing.

When the Forest Comes Alive
One of the things that makes aspen trees so unique is the way they interact with sunlight. During much of the year they are beautiful, but during peak autumn color they become something entirely different.
As the sunlight filtered through the leaves, the entire forest seemed to glow from within. The white trunks created striking contrast against the brilliant colors, making every scene feel dramatic and alive. The leaves danced in the breeze while patches of sunlight moved across the forest floor.
For a photographer, moments like these are hard to describe. You are not simply taking pictures. You are witnessing something that feels temporary and precious, knowing that within a few weeks the colors will be gone.

Continuing Toward Cedar Breaks
After spending a considerable amount of time along Webster Flat Road, I eventually continued farther up Cedar Canyon toward Cedar Breaks. As beautiful as Webster Flat was, the higher elevations brought even more spectacular displays of color.
The mountains seemed to be on fire.
Entire hillsides were covered in glowing aspens that stretched as far as the eye could see. Everywhere I looked, waves of yellow, orange, and red rolled across the landscape. I found myself stopping over and over again simply to admire what I was seeing.
Photography became secondary at times. I was so captivated by the beauty surrounding me that I often found myself putting the camera down and simply enjoying the experience.
More Than Just Photography
What I love most about places like Cedar Mountain is that they offer more than beautiful photographs. There is a peace that exists there that can be difficult to explain unless you have experienced it yourself.
Standing among those aspens, surrounded by mountain air and incredible scenery, I felt completely at peace. The noise and distractions of everyday life seemed far away. It was one of those moments where you feel connected to something greater than yourself.
I truly believe there is something special about that mountain. There is a sense of wonder and gratitude that seems to follow you wherever you go. For me, it has always been a place where I can slow down, reflect, and appreciate God's incredible creation.
Every visit reminds me how blessed we are to have such beauty surrounding us.
Why September Is My Favorite Time to Visit
If someone asked me when they should visit Cedar Canyon for photography, September would be at the very top of my list. While timing can vary slightly from year to year depending on weather conditions, late September often provides some of the most spectacular fall colors Southern Utah has to offer.
The combination of cooler temperatures, changing leaves, mountain scenery, and beautiful lighting creates endless opportunities for photographers and nature lovers alike.
Whether you are carrying a professional camera or simply enjoying the drive, the experience is unforgettable.
The Magic of Aspen Trees
Even years later, I still think about that day on Cedar Mountain. I remember the glowing leaves, the perfect light, the quiet mountain roads, and the overwhelming beauty that seemed to surround me at every turn.
Aspen trees have a way of creating moments that stay with you long after the season ends. Their colors may only last for a short time each year, but the memories they create can last a lifetime.
That is why I believe there is real magic in the aspens during fall.
Not because they are rare.
Not because they are famous.
"But because for a few brief weeks each year, they remind us just how beautiful God's creation can be."
