Summer Escapes for Southern Utah Photographers

When summer temperatures soar across Southern Utah, many photographers begin searching for cooler destinations that offer fresh subjects and stunning scenery. One of my favorite places to escape the heat is Cedar Mountain and the surrounding Cedar Breaks area. With colorful wildflowers, abundant wildlife, and breathtaking overlooks, this mountain paradise provides endless opportunities for photography throughout the summer months.

A Refreshing Escape from the Desert Heat

One of the biggest advantages of visiting Cedar Mountain during the summer is the cooler temperatures. Sitting at elevations above 10,000 feet, the mountain offers a refreshing break from the scorching desert valleys below. The crisp mountain air, dense forests, and peaceful meadows create a completely different atmosphere than the red rock landscapes most people associate with Southern Utah.

Wildflower Season at Cedar Breaks

Summer brings one of the most beautiful displays of wildflowers anywhere in Southern Utah. Throughout July and August, colorful blooms cover the mountain meadows surrounding Cedar Breaks National Monument.

Purple lupine, Indian paintbrush, sunflowers, and countless other wildflowers create vibrant foregrounds that complement the dramatic mountain scenery. Every curve in the road seems to reveal another colorful meadow waiting to be photographed.

Photographing the Beauty of Cedar Breaks

Cedar Breaks National Monument offers some of the most spectacular scenery in the region. The massive natural amphitheater is filled with colorful rock formations, spires, and cliffs that glow beautifully during sunrise and sunset.

Summer adds another layer of beauty as green forests and colorful wildflower fields surround the red and orange formations. The changing light throughout the day creates endless opportunities to capture unique images.

Whether you're photographing grand vistas or intimate landscape details, Cedar Breaks provides inspiration around every corner.

Cascade Falls: One of Southern Utah's Best Viewpoints

A visit to Cedar Mountain wouldn't be complete without stopping at Cascade Falls. This relatively easy hike leads to one of the most impressive overlooks in Southern Utah.

From the viewpoint, photographers can capture panoramic views stretching across Zion National Park, the Kolob Canyons, and countless miles of rugged wilderness. The dramatic cliffs, distant mountains, and changing light make this a location worth visiting multiple times throughout the day.

Wildlife Photography Around Strawberry Point

Strawberry Point is another favorite destination during the summer months. Known for its dramatic cliffside overlook, the area offers incredible views into the colorful canyons far below.

What makes Strawberry Point especially exciting for photographers is the wildlife. The open fields and meadows surrounding the area are often home to herds of antelope. Watching them emerge from the grasslands and run across the landscape is always a thrilling sight.

I've spent many mornings and evenings observing these beautiful animals as they move through the meadows in groups. Their speed, grace, and natural behavior create wonderful opportunities for wildlife photography.

More Than Just Landscapes

While Cedar Mountain is known for its scenic overlooks and mountain vistas, the area offers much more than landscape photography. Deer, wild turkeys, birds of prey, squirrels, and countless other animals can often be found throughout the region.

The diversity of subjects means photographers can spend an entire day exploring and never run out of things to photograph. From macro images of wildflowers to expansive mountain panoramas and wildlife encounters, the possibilities are endless.

Why I Return Every Summer

Every summer, I find myself returning to Cedar Mountain and the Cedar Breaks area. The cooler temperatures, vibrant wildflowers, active wildlife, and spectacular scenery provide a welcome contrast to the desert landscapes below.
